Tectonic Travelers is an immersive, place-based learning adventure designed for young Earth Science enthusiasts. Hosted on São Miguel Island in the Azores, this 22-day program (May 26 – June 17, 2025) explores volcanology, geology, and the dynamic forces shaping our planet. Students investigate lava stalactites in subterranean tubes, explore microbial biodiversity in geothermal pools, and visit active volcanic sites. The program includes guided excursions such as kayaking on crater lakes, a visit to a geothermal power plant, and hands-on scientific research, culminating in a final showcase project.

Meet the Team

Led by Lisé Whitfield, a US-credentialed STEM educator and research volcanologist, the program integrates hands-on scientific discovery with experiential learning. With degrees in Physics and Earth & Planetary Science and experience developing project-based STEM curricula for institutions like National Geographic, UC Berkeley, and NYU, Lisé brings deep expertise in engaging students with Earth sciences.

Venue Details

Set in the volcanic landscapes of São Miguel, the program takes place in various locations, including classroom settings in Lagoa, Ponta Delgada, and Ribeira Grande. Outdoor activities are a core element, with field-based studies at lava tubes, geothermal springs, and coastal sites. Families arrange their own accommodations, with recommended bases near program sites.

What's Included
